Grenkow’s U-Pick

Grenkow’s Strawberry U-Pick, a strawberry u-pick farm located minutes from Winnipeg on Brady Road (5 km west of St. Norbert).

Grenkow’s U-Pick started in 1998 as a very small strawberry u-pick hobby.  With three small children and lots of energy we have had a great time “growing” our new business.
Our families have a long history of farming in Manitoba, mainly in dairy.  The Grenkows farmed near Stony Mountain and the Van Walleghems farmed in Fort Garry.

As soon as the strawberry season starts in late June/early July we update this website, facebook and instagram daily with all the info you need to come out strawberry picking. Strawberry season is approx three weeks long. Our website will inform you of the hours of operation, the picking conditions, what to bring, directions, etc.  Contact us if you have any questions.

**** As some of you have heard this was our last year in the strawberry patch!  From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank each and every one of you for the support over the past 20 years! Our goal when we started was to provide a fun family oriented place to visit but we also wanted to teach the young how their food was grown.  Many elderly also rekindled memories of long ago! So hopefully we have added a few positive experiences to your life’s journey!
It has been a pleasure and a blessing serving you all! We will miss this part of our life but are definitely looking forward to our own new adventures!  Take care and we might see you next year picking over at the neighbor’s strawberry patch! (Cormier’s!!)
Colin and Debbie Grenkow  xoxo

Never picked berries before? Here’s how it works:

  • Call the farm or check web to see when there is picking (do so again just before driving out)
  • Once you get there you will be given boxes to pick in if you didn’t bring 4L ice cream pails
  • You will be assigned a row; it is marked with a flag; start picking at the flag
  • When picking please stay in your assigned row
  • Once you are done picking, move the flag to where you finished
  • To pick berries, move the leaves around and search for all the red berries. Berries do not ripen after they are picked.
  • Handle berries with care!
  • It is tempting to pick all the large berries but you will get more weight in your pail if you pick both large and small! A pail of large berries weighs approx 5 lbs and a pail of small berries weighs approx 6 lbs!
  • Pay when you are done picking
  • Keep your boxes of berries in shade if possible; do not leave in heat of car
  • Season is usually the first three weeks of July (but can vary slightly)

What to bring for your strawberry picking adventure:

  • 4L ice cream pails (if not we have 4L boxes at no charge)
  • Water
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Camera

How to freeze strawberries

  • Place strawberries in a colander and rinse lightly
  • Remove hulls and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet
  • Place trays in freezer
  • Once frozen, remove berries and put them in good quality freezer bags
  • Berries will keep for up to one year
  • By freezing them this way they are individually frozen, very easy to grab a few!

  • No other pails will be allowed in patch beside 4L ice cream pails OR our 4L boxes
  • No heaping your pails more than one inch or we will charge you extra
  • No appointments or reservations, check our hours and if we are open – come on out to pick!
  • We do not do pre-picked berries
  • Once season starts we do not always have time to answer emails promptly
  • Children welcome
  • No pets allowed in patch
  • No smoking allowed
